“The amazing improvement by each of these five swimmers is due to persistence, determination and perseverance.” Mary Rule said.

Ashfield ABC Swimming High Performance: Watch out, here we come.

Ashfield Club swimmers have qualified for the Swimming Metro South East Area Development Camp. The five Ashfield swimmers have been selected to go to three special training sessions over July, August and September. At the sessions, the swimmers focus on improving their competitive swimming racing techniques.

Katherina Lee, Kevin Lee, Marco Bautista, Elin Hicking and Lindsay Hickling all train with ABC Swimming High Performance, Ashfield. Their coach Mary Rule says “They have already improved a great deal over the past 12 months and now they need to slash just a few seconds to make that extra step to qualify for State Championships. I’m hoping the focus on the special training sessions at the area camp will help them get there.”

Katherina Lee, the youngest, is only aged 9 and she has battled it out in some of the toughest carnivals racing against swimmers that are a lot faster than her. Now she is beginning to reach new levels. Her 50m Freestyle time has gone from 44.01 to 38.20. She has 5 seconds to drop until she qualifies for State. Katherina has already been to one session and says “The camp was hard but I enjoyed it a lot”.

Marco Bautista is the new kid on the block. He strives to be the best. Every carnival he brings his famous cheer squad who stand over the edge of the pool and shout “Keep going, Marco!”. And Marco does exactly that.

“His best stroke is 50m breaststroke. He has only two seconds to lose before he makes it to State. “ Mary Rule said.

Lindsay is best known for her 50m Breaststroke. She has dropped an amazing 8 seconds off her 50m breaststroke time and 5 seconds off her backstroke. Lindsay says “Camp has been hard. But I have learned about stamina and making sure when I stand on the blocks that I start the moment the gun goes off”.

Her sister Elin finds camp fun although the training is hard. Her role model is Libby Trickett. Elin says “Libby works really hard to get where she is.” Elin knows this only too well because she too works hard to get her times down. “She has to drop just two seconds for her 50m Freestyle.” says coach Mary Rule.

Kevin Lee is 13. He has done an amazing job with dropping his times from when he first came to Ashfield. His two best strokes are Breaststroke and Freestyle, where over a year he has dropped an outstanding 8 seconds for 100m Freestyle.

“People at the camp told me how important it was to make a lot of new friends, so that they can give me tips when I’m at the carnivals” says Kevin Lee. Kevin also says that his role model is Park Tae Hwan, the South Korean champion who told Kevin never to give up and to do the best that he can.

“The amazing improvement by each of these five swimmers is due to persistence, determination and perseverance.” Mary Rule said.

“I wish the very best of luck to them all. The development camp is just the beginning to help these five swimmers on their way to a shining future.”

For many the Liverpool carnival was the first carnival they had competed in and from the start they looked like pros. The younger swimmers from junior and competitive squads especially showed that personal best swims are easy with hard training and perfect technique. The state and national squad swimmers that swan did so with class as they did PBs and took medals home to show for it. Overall Liverpool performed fantastically and showed we are a competitive squad in all ages. A big congratulations to the boys that swam the National time for their relay to the start the day off on a GREAT note! Thank you to all the helpers both swimmers and parents that made the carnival run so smoothly.
impressive 1m14.03s for the Gold, ahead of Silver teammate Renee Dettmer and Bronze medalist Sally Gilbert (Lane

NSW STATE AGE 13-18 YEARS CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP UP

9th

At the NSW State Age Swimming Championships from 5th – January,
Swimming NSW launched their LIVE RESULTS website to publish on
demand results for each event as the action unfolded at Sydney Olympic
Park Aquatic Centre. Anyone could now log on to the Swimming NSW
website and view the up to date results. This was a huge success which
Swimming NSW will continue to use in the future at upcoming State
Titles.

On the first day of the NSW State Age 13-18 Years Championships
upcoming swim star Te Haumi Maxwell (MLC Marlins) twice broke the
NSW and All Comers Record for the Boys 14 year olds 50m Freestyle.
Maxwell first stepped up to the blocks to swim the heats on Monday
morning, seeded in first position. He came up powering with fellow

competitors Dylan Brown (Yamba Orcas), Callum Smith (Twin Town Services) and Ian Carey (Port Macquarie) in the
mix to qualify for the elusive night time finals. Maxwell made a last surge to the finish pads to secure his spot in the
finals session and touched to break the NSW and All Comers record in a time of 23.88s.

However, the Maxwell domination didn’t stop there as he went on to again blitz the finals competition and break both
the NSW and All Comers Records which stood at 23.66s until the Mens 500m Freestyle on day 5. Maxwell was the first
swimmer for the MLC Marlins A team and amazingly re broke the 50m NSW State and All Comers records which now
stand at 23.52. Maxwell also collected a Silver in the Boys 14 Years 100m Butterfly. But the young 14 year old saved
his best performance until last at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, clocking a blitzing time of 52.14s for the
100m Freestyle. He annihilated Thorpie’s record and left the rest of field along with Smith and Elliott Long
(Willoughby) no chance of ever catching the speedstar. Maxwell also claimed the NSW All Comers Record for that
impressive performance.

14 year old Smith took out the signature 1500m Freestyle event in the
timed final after backing up from a Silver in the 200m Butterfly behind
Hugo Morris (Woden). Smith led the entire race packing together a
solid swim with rival Peter Shen (Sladem) hot on his heels to finish in
the Silver position.

With these golden performances heating up the pool in the first two
events of the program, other outstanding performances included the
recurring victory of Zoe Diamond (Liverpool). Day 1 saw Diamond
claim a Silver in the Girls 15 Years 200m Butterfly behind rival Zoe
Johnson (Sydney Swim PLC) and a Gold in the 200m Individual Medley.
The young 15 year old gladly bagged two (2) Gold and two (2) Silver
medals for her efforts on day 2 to dominate the Girls 15 years 100m
Breaststroke in both the heats and finals. Diamond touched in an

impressive 1m14.03s for the Gold, ahead of Silver teammate Renee Dettmer and Bronze medalist Sally Gilbert (Lane
Cove). The 400m Individual Medley was the same golden story for Diamond to go on to comfortably secure her sixth
medal at the Championships.

Diamond also claimed a Silver in the Girls 15 Years 200m Breaststroke
clocking 2m39.27s ahead of Radanovic and Gilbert for the Bronze.
However, Diamond did not stop at this victory and went on to rival
Kaitlyn Schnyder (Burley Griffin) in the 100m Freestyle, having to settle
for the Silver after 4 days of intense competition.

However, Johnson had extra success of her own at the Championships
and fought back in the 15 year olds 100m Butterfly to impressively
claim the NSW State record for her age group. Johnson took to the water
with the gold medal in her sights for the 100m Butterfly finals and
touched at the 50m turn in first position comfortably with Brooke
Dodson (Liverpool) and Eliza Smith (Hunter) slowly edging away at her
lead. Conserving her energy for the night finals, Dodson made a quick

surge home to qualify in first position followed by Johnson with Leah Bird (Sawtell) in third position respectively. The
finals saw Johnson’s one time chance to break Olympian Felicity Galvez’s State record and at the 50m turn of 28.91s
she was on good pace. Strokes in front of the competition, Johnson flied home to smash the finish wall and turned
around in celebration of her triumph to break the NSW State record in 1m01.05s.

Michael Fell (Blacktown City) had some competition to contend with the likes of Matthew Roberts (Novocastrian),
Nathan Roughley (Castle Hill RSL Dolphins) and Nathan Miller (Telopea) as he obliterated the Boys 15 years 100m
Butterfly NSW State record. The heats were an even race between the boys with Fell turning in second position at 50m
needed to make up some ground if he was to qualify in the elusive lane 4 for the finals. Fell chased Roberts down the
final lap and switched off in the closing metres to just touch him out at the wall to clock 57.80s.

14

NSW STATE AGE 13-18 YEARS CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP UP

Stepping up for the finals, Fell took to the water with great speed and came up powering to easily turn in first
position. Pulling away from the competition with every stroke, Fell stormed home to destroy the NSW State record in
a time of 55.89s. Fell also collected Silver in the Boys 50m Freestyle behind Roughley.

Suay Toprak (MLC Marlins) preferred the distance events to claim Gold in the Girls 15 Years & Under 400m Individual
Medley. Toprak had previously settled for the Silver 100m Butterfly medal along with the Bronze for 50m Freestyle
on Monday night, however, quite convincingly secured the 400m Gold clocking 5m09.51s . A ruler of all strokes,
Toprak steadily built her 400m race and continued to pull away from her age group competitors. She left nothing in
the tank for the home sprint and touched strokes ahead of Silver medalist Michelle Short (Revesby Workers) and
Bronze Sarah Hoyles (Mingara Aquatic). Toprak also claimed the Bronze in the 200m Butterfly earlier in the night.

14 year Old Emma McKeon (Wests Illawarra Aquatic) was another exciting athlete to at the Championships qualifying
under a second quicker against her rivals for the finals of the Girls 14 Years 50m Freestyle, ahead of speedsters
Maddison Schmid (SLC Aquadot) and Toprak. The three girls went head to head in the finals with Mckeon proving too
good for her competition to touch for the Gold in 26.66s, just a click away from her rivals. Mckeon also picked up
another Gold in the Girls 14 Years 100m Butterfly, with Toprak settling for the Silver.

Trinity Grammar School sensation, Kenneth To (Trinity Grammar School), excitingly
broke the Australian Age Record for the Boys 16 years 200m Individual Medley with the
SOPAC audience sharing in celebration of his magnificent achivement. To, the favourite to
win from the start, was red hot in the finals of the 200m event and annihilated swimming
legend, Ian Thorpe’s 10 year old Australian Age Record clocking 2m04.31s. To cruised in
the heats session to qualify in the elusive lane 4 comfortably ahead of Andrew Kennedy
(NC Aquatic) and Daniel Tranter (Liverpool). With a seed time of 2m06.08s, To had to
step up to the challenge if he was to not only claim Gold but also chase the great
Thorpedo’s Australian record set back in 1999. To was untouchable in the water, with his
nearest rivals at least a body length behind, he stormed home in the final lap to also
establish a new NSW State and All Comers record.

To as well bagged a NSW Record with his stellar swim in the 50m Freestyle to stop the
clock at a slick 23.24s. Nearest rivals Joshua Shea and Sam Flint both from SLC Aquadot,
put in a valiant effort to challenge the young star, however, To proved exactly how
dominate he is in the 16 year old age group picking up his magnificent 10th medal at the
Championships. To also claimed Gold in the 200m Breaststroke storming home over Nathan Grant (Blacktown City)
for the Silver and Tranter the Bronze. Tranter also shared in gold glory to impressively bag the 200m Butterfly
stopping the clock at 2m04.99s.

To also swum the 100m Butterfly to collect another Gold and just touch out Jamie Stack (SLC Aquadot) who had to
settle for the Silver, followed by Bronze medalist Alexander Sheil (SOPAC Swim Club). Bagging another 2 Gold medals
in the 100m Freestyle and Breaststroke, the 100m Freestyle win stopped the clock at 51.87s ahead of Corey
Polkinghorne (Liverpool) and Harrison Pullinger (SOPAC Swim Club). To’s usual competition Daniel Tranter
(Liverpool) and Nathan Grant (Blacktown City) stepped up onto the blocks for the 100m Breaststroke and charged
down To to try and claim the win but with a few swift strokes To convincingly claimed yet another Gold. The 400m
Individual Medley was another successful performance to steal the 16yrs All Comers record in 4m30.82s at the touch.

Fellow Trinity Grammar School athlete, Riley Innes, also stamped his
mark on these State Championships with dual Gold. Kazimir Boskovic
(Carrs Park) was Innes’ nearest rival, having consecutive State Silver
success of his own. However, Innes was unwavering in his pursuit for
the 400m Gold and edged out Boskovic in the final lap to steal the win
clocking 4m21.09s. Innes also collected another impressive Gold in
the Boys 13 Years 200m Individual Medley ahead of Silver medalist
Brandon Grochala (Liverpool) and Nicholas Duncan (Warringah
Aquatic). Innes continued this fiery stance at the Championships to
land another Gold, this time for the Boys 13 Years 100m Backstroke.
He had easily qualified the fastest athlete ahead of Duncan and
Nicholas Hawthorne (Mingara Aquatic) and set alight the night with
his blitzing 1m03.36s performance. Grochala (Liverpool) claimed the

Silver with Duncan settling for the Bronze. Grochala fought back in the 50m Freestyle storming home in an
impressive 26.19s to edge out Emilio Nogorotto (Aquaburn) with Innes picking up the Bronze, this medal added to
Grochala’s remarkable 4 Gold medals at the Championships. The effortless Gold in the 200m Backstroke was another
outstanding performance for Innes which stopped the clock at 2m17.76s. This left Angus Parsons (City of Orange)
and Ryan Hore (Tuggeranong Vikings) to fight it out for the remaining medals with Parsons just edging out Hore to
bag Silver and Hore the Bronze.

13 year old Daniel MacKay (Warringah Aquatic) received his share of success at the State titles to bag 3 Bronze
medals, a Gold and a NSW State and All Comers record. His signature swim, the 1500m Freestyle, was entertaining to
watch as MacKay pulled away with every stroke from rival Aaron Ferderer (Corrimal) and did not look back. The 6
beat kick came powering in within the final 150m to build up a fantastic final touching in NSW State and All Comers
record time of 17m56.01s. The Gold was a taste of victory for MacKay which he went on to take the 3 Bronze in the
100m Freestyle and 200m Butterfly.

15

NSW STATE AGE 13-18 YEARS CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP UP

18 year old Brittany Houghton (SLC Aquadot) was another exceptional
athlete to collect a Silver and Bronze medal for her efforts in the pool.
Houghton chased down Jessie Bullen (Bankstown) and Jordan Burns
(Mingara Aquatic) in the Girls 17-18 100m Breaststroke and stayed
level with Bullen until the final closing metres before Burns made a
final stretch to the wall to take out the Gold with Bullen receiving the
Silver and Houghton the Bronze. Houghton also challenged Jessica
Henshaw (Kingscliff) in the 50m Freestyle sprint having to settle for
the Silver clocking an impressive 26.66s.

James Magnussen (Port Macquarie) joined the excellent caliber of
record breaking athletes at the Championships with a new All Comers
record set in the Boys 17-18 Years 100m Freestyle. Magnussen took to
the water with great speed, turning in first position. His nearest rivals,

Jeremy Stock (Warringah Aquatic) & Alexander Patrulescu (SOPAC Swim Club) were stroke for stroke on the final lap
with Magnussen who just touched them out to claim the All Comers record in 50.76s. Magnussen also collected
Bronze in the 50m Freestyle on Wednesday night behind Stock who valiantly claimed the NSW State record and
Andrew Abood (Kingscliff) for the Silver.

Team player Alex Gohari (SOPAC Swim Club) could not say no to Club relay victory bagging an impressive 4 relay
medals. It was Gold, Gold, Gold for Gohari in the Mens 500m Freestyle Relay, Boys 18&U 800m Freestyle Relay and
Boys 18&U 400m Freestyle Relay for the SOPAC Swim Club, with a lone Bronze in the Boys 18&U 400m Medley Relay.
However, Gohari also picked up some individual medals for his pet Freestyle stroke with excellent performances in
the 100m and 200m to bag a Bronze a piece. The golden victory came in the 100m Butterfly with Gohari flying
beyond the competition and smash the wall at 55.10s also grabbing the All Comers record for that exceptional swim.

Matthew Jepson (Sea Eagles) had a busy finals session on day 4 of the Championships and performed with excellence
to bag Gold in the 14 years 200m Individual Medley clocking 2m15.06s. For such a young athlete, Jepson executed his
event program with great skill as he needed to conserve enough energy to back up for the 400m Freestyle.
Challenging rival Callum Smith (Twin Town Services), with 4 medals including a Gold to his name, Jepson chased
down Smith in the closing laps. However, Smith proved too good in the end to pick up the Gold with Jepson the Silver
and Peter Shen (Sladem) the Bronze.

Another outstanding performance at the Championships was Jessica Legge (Novocastrian) who took out the 16 Years
100m Breaststroke with ease. Legge, also part of the NSW Institute of Sport training program, had always been
dominant in the Breaststroke discipline and did not disappoint clocking a slick 1m12.15s leaving Afton Palmer
(Leeton) and Kimberly Mitleher (Albury North Lavington) in her wake. Legge also stepped up to the blocks for the
400m Individual Medley where Megan Ramsay (Ginninderra) showed her outstanding skill and powered home to take
out the Gold with Legge collecting the Silver and Katelyn Siddle (Castle Hill RSL Dolphins) the Bronze.

In another impressive performance, Kirstie Meertens (The Hills) also smashed a NSW Record in the Girls 15 Year olds
100m Backstroke. Strokes in front of Jordan White (SLC Aquadot) and Eliza Smith (Hunter), Meertens pulled away
from her opponents touching the wall in 1m02.99s to set a new NSW State Record. White also picked up the Bronze in
Girls 15 Years 200m Butterfly and impressively backed up for the 200m Individual Medley to chase down Zoe
Diamond (Liverpool) to claim the Silver.

16 year old Nicole Mee (Uniswim) obliterated the field with her performance in the 200m Butterfly to leave Natalie
Fegan (Castle Hill RSL Dolphins) and Emily Chaffey (Hunter) at least 3 body lengths behind. Mee led the entire race
with every stroke pulling away from her rivals to chase down Gold and clock an impressive 2m13.53s. Mee also
collected Bronze in the 50m Freestyle behind Kailah Elliott (Trinity Grammar School) and Skye Cater (Warringah
Aquatic).

Stacey Hansford (Bankstown) dominated the 17-18 year old age group
and took home 2 Gold’s for her efforts. Hansford was exceptional in the
200m Butterfly turning level with Liana Rayner (SLC Aquadot) at the first
50m. Still neck to neck on the third lap, Hansford put her foot down and
powered into the wall finishing in 2m15.38s. The 200m Individual Medley
was another convincing win with Monique Van Balen (Ryde) taking home
the Silver and Jordan Burnes (Mingara Aquatic) the Bronze. Burnes also
added to her medal tally with a Silver and Bronze for the 100m
Backstroke and 400m Freestyle. However, the Hansford onslaught did not
stop there with the 18 year old hitting the water in the 800 Freestyle. In a
close race with Sarah O’Neill (Blacktown City), Hansford clocked a
personal best time with 8m53.07s to win her third consecutive Gold
medal on the final day of the Championships.

16

NSW STATE AGE 13-18 YEARS CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP UP

Carlile athlete Luke Stirton was another outstanding performance bagging 2 silvers in the 17-18 year old age group.
Challenging top seed Kieran Casey (Mingara Aquatic) for the title in the 200m Individual Medley, Stirton was in the
mix to take home the Gold, however, Casey made a last surge in the final metres to close the deal with the Gold.
Stirton’s next event, 200m Butterfly, saw a catch me if you can attitude by Callum Timms (SLC Aquadot) to steal the
win in an impressive 2m02.13s.

The Club relay teams were not spared of record breaking success with
Liverpool and SLC Aquadot being the stand out teams. Liverpool put
Alissa Williams, Brooke Dodson Tijana Radanovic and Zoe Diamond to
the test in the Girls 16 & Under 400m Freestyle Relay and emerged
triumphant with a new 15/16 Years NSW State and All Comers records.
The girls had swift relay change overs, going head to head with SLC
Aquadot, but the Liverpool team pulled together a tight race to touch in
4m00.62 and take out the Gold. The boys of Liverpool followed the girls
impressive lead and cracked the 15/16 Years Boys 16 & Under 400m
Medley Relay NSW State and All Comers records. Corey Polkinghorne,
Daniel Tranter, Keiran Qaium and Alexander McMurrary were
unstoppable once more against SLC Aquadot continuing to power down
the pool and touch in 3m57.92s.

However, SLC Aquadot claimed their victory against Liverpool in the Boys 16 Years & Under 400m Freestyle relay with
the talent of Kyle O’Brien, Sam Flint, Jaimie Stack and Joshua Shea. In a smoking time of 3m35.69s, these boys
meant real business as they took to the water and turned out blitzing split times to take out the Gold as well the
15/16 Years NSW State and All Comers records for that event. The Boys 18 & Under 400m Medley relay team also
wanted some of the action as Rhett Chapman, Matthew Condos, Callum Smith and Ryan Hanson stepped up for
their team event. With Revesby Workers and SOPAC Swim Club teams hot on their heels, the boys kept hitting up
perfect relay change overs to get an extra edge over the competition and be rewarded with the 17/18 NSW State and
All Comers records in an impressive 3m58.67s.

The NSW State Age Championship Pointscore Trophy was also awarded for the highest ranking team with the greatest
number of points at the conclusion of the 5 days of competition. The top 10 Clubs finished as follows:

1. SLC Aquadot -2,271 points

STATE AGE 10&UNDER-12 YEARS CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the most spectacular turn out Swimming NSW has seen in a number of years, the Sydney Olympic Park stage
was ignited by the young swim stars annihilating 11 NSW and All Comers records at the NSW State Age 10 &
Under – 12 years Championships.

On 10th – 11th January, 760 athletes flocked to SOPAC at the Sydney Olympic
Park Aquatic Centre with Olympians Eamon Sullivan, Libby Trickett and
Andrew Lauterstein making special appearances over the weekend.
Athletes, young children and parents alike lined up for hours just to get a
glimpse for their Olympic heroes signing autographs and taking photos with
their NSW fans. Sullivan, Trickett and Lauterstein were promoting the
upcoming Telstra Australian Swimming Championships in March which only
encouraged our athletes to post some outstanding performances.

Ryan Leonard (Macquarie Shores) stunned the SOPAC audience with his 7
straight Gold medals and 4 records over the weekend. Leonard was
unstoppable, clocking an impressive 1m01.63s for the 100m Freestyle with
rivals Patrick Yap (Epping Bullet) Vladmir Pan (Berkerly) unable to catch the speedstar. The 100m Backstroke
saw Matthew Mensforth (Hunter) challenge Leonard for the Gold but Leonard just turned on the power and
finished a clear 3.29s ahead of Mensforth and Henry Kamp (Bayside) at the touch. Posting results strokes ahead
of the competition it wasn’t a surprise Leonard also nabbed two (2) NSW State and All Comers records in the
200m Individual Medley with 2m27.22s and 100m Butterfly clocking 1m07.46s.

Mensforth also showed off his successes at the Championships bagging Gold of his own in the 11 & Under 200m
Backstroke and Butterfly. From the start Mensforth was leading the charge ahead of Matthew Pender (Y Valley
Aquatic) and Won Ho Kim (Ryde-Carlile) and kept flying away with each lap. Mensforth turned up the heat on the
final lap to speed home in 2m34.22s and take home the Gold. However, in the 200m Backstroke it was a constant
battle with Yap hot on his heels throughout the entire race. It came down to the final 25m with Mensforth edging
out Yap to touch in 2m36.50s, Yap collected the Silver and Oliver Moody (Singleton) the Bronze. Mensforth also
bagged another 3 Silver and 2 Bronze for his efforts over the weekend.

Patrick Yap also performed outstandingly against his rivals to collect a Gold medal of his own in the 200m
Breaststroke clocking a swift 2m57.23s ahead of Mensforth and Liam Wood (Ryde-Carlile). Yap had at least 2
strokes ahead of the competition and continued to pull away throughout the race to convincingly take out the
title. From then on Yap went back to back Silver with the 200m Breaststroke and Individual Medley and 100m
Butterfly. He also collected Bronze in the 200m Freestyle and 100m Breaststroke to finish off a triumphant
weekend of competition.

10 year old Jan Reodique (Cherrybrook Carlile) was another consistent
athlete who put in a number of exceptional performances to take home a
total of 5 medals. An eager team player, Reodique, along with team mates
Aimee Harvey, Samantha Ying and Bronte Aiken put in a solid gold
medal winning performances against Club rivals Abbotsleigh and Ryde-
Carile to take out the 10 & Under 200m Freestyle Relay in 2m06.76s. The
girls had precise change overs and constant fast pace to convincingly
steal the win with Abbotsleigh taking the Silver and Ryde-Carlile the
Bronze. Stepping in again for the Club Relays, Reodique was reunited
with Harvey and Aiken but brought in Breaststroke specialist Brooke
Mindham to complete the Gold winning team for the 10 & Under 200m

Medley Relay. The girls again were consistent in their pursuit for victory with Aiken touching for Cherrybrook
Carlile in an impressive 2m28.21s. Kincumber Pacific Dolphins grabbed the Silver and Ryde-Carile settled for the
Bronze. Reodique emerged with some extra confidence after these wins and bagged a Silver in the 100m
Butterfly behind Abbey Harkin (Novocastrian) and a Bronze in the 100m Backstroke and 200m Individual
Medley.

Sydney Swim PLC sensation, Nicole Chen, was another stand out performer smashing the Girls 11 years 50m
Freestyle NSW State and All Comers Records to post 28.83s. Chen also took out the 100m Freestyle but Lucy
Tabrett (Novocastrian) fought back at her until the closing metres with Chen touching in 1m04.06s, Tabreet in
1m04.34s. The Girls 11 & Under 200m Freestyle was a breeze for Chen but Alessandra Colombini (Bayside)
made a last surge on the final lap with the touch deciding Chen the winner in 2m19.48s and have Colombini
collect the Silver. Chen also picked up a Bronze in the 100m Freestyle and 100m Breaststroke.

Newly formed NC Aquatics, produced some fantastic results out of Joel
Walker, including shattering the Boys 10 & Under 100m Butterfly NSW State
and All Comers record in 1m11.65s. Oliver Moody (Singleton) was quick off
the blocks and turned in 1st position at the 50m mark, but Walker made a
tremendous come back to swim over Moody and collect the Gold. However,
Moody responded with back to back Gold’s against Walker in the 100m
Breaststroke and 50m Freestyle to also impressively claim the NSW 10 &
Under and All Comers records. Walker went on to convincingly take out the
100m Freestyle in 1m04.99 as well as the 100m Backstroke and 200m
Individual Medley.

21

NSW STATE AGE 10&UNDER-12 YEARS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Elise Pidutti (Novocastrian) made her mark on the Championships in the Girls 12 Year old category. Pidutti was
consistent across her State event program picking up a decisive win in the 100m Breaststroke clocking 1m17.46s
ahead of Alexandra Sinadinovic (Wests Illawarra Aquatic) and Tayla Pevy – Siever (Novocastrian). It was a battle
to the end between Pidutti and Meg Bailey (Hunter) in the 200m Individual Medley with both girls playing “catch
me if you can” throughout the race. The girls turned level at the 150m mark with Pidutti switching on the 6 beat
kick and come home powering to stop the clock at 2m32.06s. Pidutti also bagged a gold in the 200m
Breaststroke and Silver in the 100m & 200m Butterfly and 100m Backstroke.

Another 12 year old star, Georgia Miller (Warringah) was electric in the
water over the weekend taking out the treble gold in the Girls 12 Years
50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle. In the 1 lap sprint, Gabrielle Turnbull
(Revesby Workers) was with Miller stroke for stroke, you couldn’t separate
the two stellar athletes until the closing 5 metres with Miller taking a full
stroke on the wall to touch out Turnbull in a sizzling 27.66s, Turnbull
clocking 27.69s. Ami Matsuo collected the Bronze for Carlile. The three

(3) girls swum the same tight race in the 100m Freestyle, with Turnbull in
front at the 50m mark. Miller could see the Gold within her grasp and
charged down Matsuo and Turnbull to take out her 2nd Freestyle medal at
the Championships. She quickly changed over to the Butterfly discipline
with ease to collect another Gold for her efforts.
10 year old competitor Emma Harris (Y Valley Aquatic) was a bombshell in the Girls 11 & Under 200m Freestyle
placing 12th overall but remarkably claiming the NSW State 10 & Under and All Comers records in 2m32.38. With
only 11 year olds in front of Harris, she was not intimidated by the older, sometimes stronger competition and
powered into the wall to collect those records.

Young Emily Rosskelly (Wests Illawarra Aquatic) stole the Gold in the Girls 10 & Under 50m Freestyle posting an
excellent time of 30.77s to also smash the NSW State 10 & Under and All Comers records. Olivia Gunawan
(Hurstville Aquatic) and Abbey Harkin (Novocastrian) stepped up onto the SOPAC blocks to rival Rosskelly in the
sprint but she proved to be too strong for Harkin and Gunawan with Rosskelly edging them out in the closing
metres. Gunawan collected the Silver and Harkin settled for the Bronze.

SOPAC Swim Club’s 11 year old, Felicity Burnett, stamped her mark
on the Championships with a number of exceptional performances
over the weekend. In the Girls 12 & Under 400m Freestyle, Burnett
put in an brilliant effort to match up against her older competitors
and remarkably broke the 11 Years NSW State and All Comers records
for her age group in that particular event. Placing 12th overall, this
position did not effect Burnett’s success as she smashed the wall in
4m48.96s to claim her well deserved records. With this achievement,
Burnett took to the water for the 11 & Under 200m Butterfly with
leaders Jade Moody (Singleton) and Chen in her sights. With just a
nick of the leading pace, Burnett put in a solid performance to
comfortably settle for the Bronze, J Moody the Gold in 2m34.93s and
Chen the Silver. Burnett also collected Bronze in the 100m Freestyle.

J Moody didn’t let her competitors get too far ahead and threw everything she had at Annabel Hopkins (Gosford
Stingrays) in the 200m Backstroke but proved too strong in the closing metres with Hopkins taking the Gold and
J Moody having to settle for the Silver. In the 200m Individual Medley, J Moody was stroke for stroke with Lucy
Tabrett (Novocastrian) with Tabrett making her move in the Backstroke and taking the lead on the second 50m.
However, J Moody started to make up some significant ground in the Breaststroke and turned level with Hopkins
for the Freestyle sprint. It was a nail biting finish which saw Hopkins just edge out J Moody for the win. J Moody
bagged the Silver with Nicole Chen (Sydney Swim PLC) collecting the Bronze.

The NSW State Age Championship Pointscore Trophy was also awarded for the highest ranking team with the
greatest number of points at the conclusion of the 5 days of competition. The top 10 Clubs finished as follows:

1. Novocastrian -978 points
2. Carlile -642 points
3. Ryde-Carlile -615 points
4. Hunter -592 points
7. MLC Marlins -435 points
8. Bayside -425 points
What a morning we had at the Speedo Sprint heats on Sunday 8th February, Liverpool had a number of swimmers compete in the 13years and under meet with eight (8) first place finishes, 29 swims at the final and a trifecta in the 11yrs girls breaststroke! For McCredie Park massive personal best swims were swam and some perfect techniques were shown off with many swimmers qualifying for the finals. Congratulations to all swimmers you showed the coaches that your hard work at training is paying off and that you are taking note of the tips that are being passed on to you and putting them into practice. Good Luck to those swimmers that are swimming in the finals – Remember the work you put in at training is what you will get out of your races!!!
